Product release information for VIPRE Identity Shield, released on October 24, 2018.

VIPRE Identity Shield keeps your private details out of the bad guys’ hands with the ultimate privacy maintenance software! It scans your computer for exposed personal information that can endanger your identity, allowing you to see the details and clean your system with a click.

Features

  • Keeps login and personal details safe - Locates user and password information stored in your web browsers and displays saved phone numbers, email addresses, home and business addresses, and credit cards
  • Webcam and microphone blocker - Prevents outside attempts to access your webcam or microphone
  • Cleans web browser tracks - See all of your web browser site histories and tracking cookies
  • Identifies private information within saved documents - Scans your PC for insurance or medical information, financial data, credit cards and passwords, and optionally store them in an encrypted Vault.
  • Keeps your browsing private - Actively blocks attempts to track you online and scrambles your "digital fingerprint" so sites cannot easily tell who you are

Improvements

With this release, product improvements have been made in the areas listed below.

  • Webcam detection improved to handle some cases where other software did not properly release control of the webcam. In these cases, it was difficult for VIPRE Identity Shield to take control of the webcam when enabling the Webcam Blocker feature.

Known Issues and Workarounds

This section lists issues that are known at the time of release. In some cases, these are bugs in which we are working to resolve with a subsequent release. Other items may be due to causes outside of our control, such as bugs with other vendors' software. In all cases, we have tried to provide a workaround for you to consider, in case you should experience the issue.

There are a large number of documents scanner results

  • IDSHIELD-30 - The Documents scanner can return a lot of results. The displayed documents may be flagged for various reasons, but the end result is that VIPRE has identified potentially compromising information in each. We recommend reviewing each document picked up by the scan to determine if the personal information contained in the document is an issue.

Workaround: None. We are currently using a "Better safe than sorry" approach. We feel that it is better to identify potentially compromising documents on your PC than to NOT identify them. VIPRE is making improvements to this feature in a future release.

I cannot enable the webcam blocker; the switch is grayed out

  • IDSHIELD-33 - A small number of webcams are not recognized by VIPRE Identity Shield. If your webcam is not recognized, the "Webcam Blocker" switch will be grayed out, and you will not be able to enable the feature.

Workaround: This issue has been identified and we are working on a resolution. In the meantime, you may choose to disconnect or disable your webcam manually, or physically cover your webcam lens.

The Microsoft Edge browser extension says it's from "an unknown source"

  • IDSHIELD-21 - In Microsoft Edge, when viewing the details of the web browser extension, the descriptive text reads "From an unknown source”.
Workaround: None. The extension works correctly. This text will be updated in a future release.

I occasionally see an information pop-up window about my scans, but the information it shows has different scan numbers than the actual product screen

  • IDSHIELD-36 - The scan summary notification pop-up may not display the same scan information as the actual product screen.

Workaround: None. The function of the pop-up notification is to alert you that you have completed a scan, but have not yet taken action. The details in the notification graphic may not reflect the details in the actual scan screen. This will be fixed in our next release.

Bug Fixes

Bugs fixed with this release are listed in this section.

  • IDSHIELD-22 - Install quietly stops after clicking "Yes" to proceed in the User Account Control window
  • IDSHIELD-24 - Removed unnamed, color-coded column from Documents tab, as color-coding provided little value
  • IDSHIELD-35 - UI may lockup when selecting multiple websites under "Login Credentials" and then clicking on "Delete"
  • IDSHIELD-40 - Improved user experience when uninstalling the plugin from Firefox
  • IDSHIELD-42 - In the Vault, improved the user experience when changing a category assignment
  • IDSHIELD-43 - Fixed inconsistency with the count of documents reported in the Vault
