The Firewall has two modes to accommodate how much users want to manage their network themselves. You pick the mode under Firewall Default Behaviors.
Standard Mode
Standard Mode is suited for most users who want basic firewall protection and do not have to do anything more to manage it (no prompts). It is recommended for those who are less knowledgeable about computers and computer networking. All you need to do is keep the firewall enabled in the Standard Mode, which is the default.
In Standard Mode, the firewall allows all outgoing communication (i.e., websites accessing the web) and blocks any incoming communication (i.e., hackers trying to access your computer).
While in this mode, you can still make changes and create rules as needed. Feel free to contact Technical Support for FREE to help you change your firewall settings.
Note: The only exception to Standard Mode is if you use a dial-up service (as opposed to cable or DSL) to access the Internet. You will have to confirm the dial-up numbers you use to access the Internet. Also, you are always asked to confirm a number if a new number is dialed or if a telephone number is changed.
Learning Mode
Learning Mode is an ADVANCED setting. If you are not experienced working with firewalls, set the firewall to Standard Mode.
Learning Mode, better suited for more experienced users, will frequently prompt you to essentially teach the Firewall how to act. You will be prompted to take action on activities by applications and for certain Operating System actions. Your actions in response to the prompts can be remembered and applied to this activity in the future by creating or modifying a rule.
Example: Applications
For example, if you are running a gaming application ("Generic Game") and you click "Allow" when prompted and checking "Add a rule...", the Firewall creates an Application rule for the "Generic Game" application. If desired, you can further customize this generated Application rule from the Application Exceptions screen.
