Product release information for VIPRE SafeSend (PC add-in v5.2.6.18, Web add-in v5.2.3.3) Service Release, released on March 13, 2023.

What's New

We are pleased to provide you with a service release for SafeSend, which includes bug fixes and other updates we felt were too important to wait for the next version update. Details can be found below.

Web Add-in

If you use the SafeSend Web Add-in with Outlook for Windows, you may have noticed sometimes that there was a multiple-second delay when trying to send an email with an embedded attachment. This is fixed in Safesend Web add-in v5.2.3.3, and you should no longer notice any delay.

We've also completed some work behind the scenes to improve logging to assist with troubleshooting environment-specific issues.

PC Add-in

Between our personal devices and notifications at work, notification fatigue is a real thing. To help combat this, we've introduced new settings (see below) that give you more control over which conditions result in a confirmation prompt. You can read a use case for this below:

Scenario: As a DLP policy maker, I don't want users to get a pop-up for emails directed at a single external recipient. I have to weigh up a compromise between user experience and the risk of accidental data loss. Based on the experience and data collected, the impact of a DLP breach connected to accidental email is much worse if there are a) multiple recipients and b) attachments on the email.

In contrast, we also understand that there may be times that, when sending emails to a certain organization or domain, you may want them always checked, no matter what the scenario. We've added the capability to define a list of domains that will always pop up a verification dialog box. You can read a use case for this below:

Scenario:  As a DLP policy maker, I'd like the ability to define a group of external domains (in addition to specific email addresses) that would be subject to a slightly more cautious ruleset and represent an exception of sorts. These domains/addresses have been identified as high-value recipients where a careless email could result in particularly damaging consequences.

New PC Add-in Settings

Below is a list of all new settings in this PC add-in service release and their default state. Click here to manage your SafeSend settings.

Setting Name Description
PopupForExternalAttachments Set to False by default.
PopupForExternalRecipients True - The default for new installs is to pop up for all external recipients. This should be changed to false if other Popup settings are to be used for finer control.
PopupForMatchingRecipientsRegex  Set to False by default.
PopupForMultipleDomains  Set to False by default.
PopupForMultipleExternalDomains  Set to False by default.
PopupForReplyToRecipients  Set to False by default.
StringNotifyMatchingRecipientsRegexMatched

“ “ - Extra string that is displayed when PopupForMatchingRecipientsRegex triggers the confirmation dialog. Supports the same formatting tags as the main window.

e.g.; “This is formatted text<br>new line<br><b>Bold</b><i>Italic</i><a href="www.vipre.com">Hyperlink</a><color=128,50,50>Color</color>”

Important

If all the new Popup settings listed above are their default values, then the older “OnlyPopup” settings will be applied. If any of the new Popup settings listed above are configured, then the older “OnlyPopup” settings will be ignored.

One exception to the above statement: OnlyPopupForNewEmailThreads has no new Popup setting associated with it so it will still function as it always has regardless of which Popup/OnlyPopup settings are configured.

Removed PC add-in Settings

The following settings have been removed from the PC add-in:

  • ConfirmExternalRecipients
  • ConfirmReplyToRecipients

VIPRE Recommends

It's critical to keep all software in your environment as up-to-date as possible. New software releases often fix issues with older versions of the product that, unless addressed, could leave you vulnerable. As such, VIPRE recommends updating to the most recent version as soon as possible.

Check the current status of older product versions on the VIPRE Product Lifecycle Matrix to learn when support for specific product versions may end.

Other items may be due to causes outside of our control, such as bugs with other vendors' software. In all cases, we have tried to provide a workaround for you to consider, should you experience an issue.

If you have questions about a specific issue, please provide the issue ID (if applicable) when contacting our Technical Support team.

Known Issues from Previous Versions

Ticket Number Description
SAFE-1287 (Web Add-in) When replying to an email from the side reading pane in Outlook, the text of a nested message will not be scanned by the DLP add-on

Workaround: Open the email and reply in a maximized/expanded window; this will allow it to be scanned
SAFE-1147 (PC and Web Add-in) Confirmation window positioned incorrectly

Workaround: Ensure all of your monitors are set to the same scale
SAFE-808 (Web Add-in) When StringMainMessage in Exchange/OWA is too long, it can take up the whole SafeSend confirmation dialog box and sometimes cause the page to be unresponsive

Workaround: Keep your string as short as possible; it’s recommended to not use more than 140 characters (including spaces); it’s also important to ensure your browser window is maximized.
SAFE-757 (Web Add-in) An event is created on the organizer's calendar when clicking Send on the Outlook event in Microsoft365, then clicking Cancel from the SafeSend confirmation dialog box.

Workaround: Manually cancel the Outlook event.
SAFE-929

Adding a new embedded image when using Reply, Reply All, or Forward causes any previously embedded image to disappear from the confirmation dialog box

Workaround: Confirm that your Drafted email is what you want to send and ignore the list in the confirmation dialog box
