DMARC Filtering

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is a protocol that uses SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail ) to determine the authenticity of an email.

DMARC allows domain owners to specify how to handle emails that were not authenticated using SPF or DKIM. Users can then opt to quarantine those emails or reject them entirely. Doing so helps VIPRE better identify spammers and prevent malicious emails from invading consumer inboxes while minimizing false positives.

DMARC records are published alongside the rest of your domains’ DNS records, such as SPF, MX, and CNAME etc.

Important

Not all receiving servers will perform a DMARC check before accepting a message; however, implementation is always increasing.

Key Benefits

  • Reputation: Prevents unauthenticated parties from sending mail from your domain
  • Visibility: Increases visibility into emails sent from your domain by letting you know who is sending email from your domain
  • Security: Helps the email ecosystem as a whole become more secure by establishing a consistent policy for dealing with messages that fail to authenticate

Enabling DMARC Filtering

  1. Within VIPRE Email Security Cloud, locate Service Settings in the side navigation bar and click Filtering
  2. Under Additional Quarantine Settings, you'll be able to set quarantine at SPF Failure and DKIM Failure as desired
  3. Click DMARC Policy to enforce the DMARC policies specified by the sender
  4. Click Save at the bottom

Refer to Service Settings for additional details on all available filtering options.
