Restart an Agent

When an agent is stopped, it can no longer communicate with VIPRE Cloud. These steps will help you get an agent back up and running so that VIPRE Cloud may communicate with the agent and manage its device.

When you send the Stop Agent command, VIPRE Cloud shuts down the main VIPRE service on the end device (sbamsvc for Windows agents, vipre for Mac agents). As this service is needed for VIPRE Cloud to communicate with the device, all communication between the device and VIPRE are lost at this point. You will need to perform some manual action in order to restore the connection between VIPRE Cloud and the agent.

Option 1: Restart the device (Windows and Mac)

The simplest option may be to restart the endpoint device.

  1. Log in to the device (either directly or remotely) and issue a reboot command
    or
  2. Manually shut down and/or restart the device as needed

The VIPRE agent service will start up automatically as part of the system boot process.

Option 2: Manually start the agent service through the UI (Windows)

If you have remote or direct access to the device, you can use the Microsoft Windows Services console.

To start a Windows agent with Windows Services

  1. Open the Microsoft Windows Services console (services.msc)
  2. Locate VIPRE Business Agent
  3. Click Start

The VIPRE agent service will start, and you should see the device listed in VIPRE Cloud within 1 to 2 heartbeats (1–2 minutes).

Option 3: Start the agent using the command line (Windows and Mac)

Additionally, you may start an agent on a device using a system command. This can be done via the Windows command prompt, a script pushed out via GPO, or another remote tool. For agents on Mac, use the macOS Terminal.

To start a Windows agent using the command line

  1. Access the command line on the device
  2. Enter: sc start sbamsvc

To start a Mac agent with the Terminal app

  1. Launch the macOS Terminal (ApplicationsUtilitiesTerminal)
  2. Enter the following command to start the agent: sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vipre.macos.agent.plist

The VIPRE agent service will start, and you should see the device listed in VIPRE Cloud within 1 to 2 heartbeats (1–2 minutes).
