Product release information for SafeSend Self-Hosted version 6.0, released on 2025 November 02.

What's New

We're excited to announce a strategic renaming of VIPRE SafeSend! The product you know will now be referred to as VIPRE SafeSend Self-Hosted.

This change is a significant step we're taking to pave the way for a major leap forward in our product line: the upcoming release of VIPRE SafeSend Cloud! VIPRE SafeSend Self-Hosted will continue to provide the robust, data loss prevention and control that so many of our business and enterprise clients rely on.

VIPRE Recommends

Keeping all software in your environment as up-to-date as possible is critical. New software releases often fix issues with older product versions that, unless addressed, could leave you vulnerable. As such, VIPRE recommends updating to the most recent version as soon as possible.

You can check the current status of older product versions on the VIPRE Product Lifecycle Matrix to learn when support for specific product versions may end.

Web Add-in

A Radically Simplified and Powerful Administrative Experience

We heard your feedback, and with SafeSend Self-Hosted 6.0, we’ve transformed the deployment and management process. Say goodbye to complex, manual setups! A new, simplified scripted deployment replaces previous configuration steps, getting you up and running faster than ever, dramatically reducing administrative overhead.

The biggest game-changer for our administrators is the introduction of multi-policy support from a single deployment. Previously, separate policies required separate web servers. Now, you can effortlessly create and assign distinct policies to different users or groups all from one place. Whether your finance department needs stricter rules than your sales team, you can now manage it all with ease.

We’ve also introduced the new SafeSend Admin Role, allowing you to limit full administrative access.

An Intuitive and Uninterrupted User Experience

SafeSend Self-Hosted 6.0 is built for the reality of a hybrid workforce. By leveraging Microsoft's powerful Smart Alerts API, we now offer vastly superior offline capabilities. When a user is offline:

  • With the Prompt User policy, they no longer have to worry about losing their work; SafeSend will intelligently queue up the message and send it automatically once connectivity is restored
  • For less restrictive scenarios, the Softblock policy provides flexibility, allowing a user to "send anyway" and bypass SafeSend if necessary

This ensures that productivity is never interrupted, whether your team is in the office, on a plane, or working from home.

Users will also appreciate the enhanced transparency directly within Outlook; when sending to an external recipient, they'll see a clear status update—from "Checking email" to "Review required"—giving them confidence that SafeSend is actively protecting them.

Effortless Setup with the New ‘Getting Started’ Wizard

To complement our redesigned UI, we've embedded a powerful ‘Getting Started’ wizard to make initial configuration an absolute breeze. This intuitive, guided process walks you through the essential steps to get your organization protected in minutes, eliminating guesswork and ensuring a flawless setup.

The wizard will seamlessly guide you to:

  • Establish a baseline by configuring your Default Policy, securing your core organization in a single step by adding a Safe Domain
  • Create new, custom policies tailored to the unique needs of your various departments
  • Add a powerful DLP ruleset and instantly link it to a policy, applying robust data protection with just a few clicks
  • Assign your policies to the correct users and groups, ensuring the right people are covered by the right rules from day one

The ‘Getting Started’ wizard is all about getting you from deployment to protection faster than ever before.

Key Updates to System Requirements and Deployment

To ensure you have access to the most advanced security features and performance, we've updated our system requirements. SafeSend Self-Hosted 6.0 has been heavily optimized and developed for the Microsoft Azure environment. Due to this shift in focus, we have removed support for older environments, including Exchange 2019 and specific builds of Microsoft Outlook for Windows (2019 and 2016 version 1910 - build 12130.20272).

.NET Core 8.0 Capable Web Servers have also been removed from the standard system requirements list to emphasize the move to Azure.

Important

For organizations that require using a web server other than Microsoft Azure, please be advised that this will require you to contact our Support team to ensure a smooth and secure integration.

Upgrade to SafeSend 6.0 today and empower your organization with the most intelligent, flexible, and user-friendly data loss prevention tool on the market.

Fixed in this Release

  • Language Error: Users using certain languages may have encountered incorrect or improperly localized text strings within the application interface.
  • File Name DLP Rule Conflict: Previously, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) rules intended to scan for sensitive data within a file were incorrectly being triggered by the file's name itself, leading to false positives or inaccurate matches.
  • PowerPoint Scan Failure: Certain PowerPoint (.pptx) files were failing to be scanned by the DLP engine, resulting in misleading error messages like CANNOT_SCAN or INVALID_FILE instead of the expected content analysis.
  • Internal Distribution Lists (DLs) Login Issue: Customers experienced a persistent login request loop or "need admin approval" prompt when attempting to send emails to internal distribution lists. This was resolved by fixing an issue caused by an outdated or deprecated access token process.
  • Encrypted Email Sign-in Prompt: An unexpected Microsoft Sign-in prompt would appear when sending an encrypted email to an external recipient. This was resolved by correctly adding a necessary email header when older, "legacy" authentication tokens are disabled.
  • Safesend Web Send Button Grayed Out: Users of Safesend 5.5 found that the web send button was sometimes inaccessible (grayed out) when trying to send a .msg file that contained Word document attachments. We've fixed this by ensuring the attachment status is correctly displayed while the Data Loss Prevention (DLP) system is actively scanning the email content.

Thank you for your continued trust in VIPRE Security as we navigate the future together.

Known Issues and Workarounds

This section highlights issues identified at the time of release. Some are bugs that we are actively addressing in future updates, while others may be related to third-party software. We've provided workarounds to help you manage these situations effectively wherever possible.

If you need more information on a specific issue, please share the ticket number (if applicable) when contacting our Technical Support team.

SafeSend Self-Hosted Web Add-in version 6.0

  • Task Pane Rendering in Classic Outlook
    • After clicking "Review Notification," the SafeSend task pane may appear empty, or the confirmation dialog box may fail to appear entirely
    • Workaround: Simply click the review option a second time; the pane usually loads correctly on the subsequent attempt
  • Admin Portal Re-authentication Redirect
    • Admins attempting to switch user accounts using the "Sign In With a Different Account" flow may be presented with an "Access Denied" page rather than the dashboard
    • Workaround: Refreshing the current page or opening the Admin Portal URL in a new browser tab will resolve the permissions error, authenticate you correctly, and grant full access
  • Attachment Removal Logic on macOS
    • Emails sent on macOS devices may fail with an 'index cannot be found' log error if an attachment is removed via the SafeSend prompt
    • Workaround: If you need to remove an attachment, manually delete the file from the email body first, then click Review or Send
  • Audit Log Status Precision
    • Removing a grouped domain or all external recipients during the review process, may cause the Log Status to fail to update, or display as "Sent" rather than the more specific "Modified & Sent"
    • Workaround: No workaround is required for email functionality; this is strictly a reporting label variance that is actively being investigated for a future patch

SafeSend Self-Hosted Web Add-in v5.5 or below

  • Calendar Event Creation on Cancel
    • When sending an Outlook event in Microsoft 365 and then canceling from the SafeSend confirmation dialog box, an event is created on the organizer's calendar
    • Workaround: Manually cancel the Outlook event
  • Embedded Image Disappearance (Fixed in version 6.0)
    • Adding a new embedded image when using "Reply," "Reply All," or "Forward" causes previously embedded images to disappear from the SafeSend confirmation dialog box
    • Workaround: Confirm that the drafted email is correct and disregard the list in the confirmation dialog box

The following SafeSend Web Add-in issues are due to Microsoft Outlook's inherent behaviors and are not considered SafeSend bugs. There are no workarounds for these issues.

  • Attachment Size Discrepancy:
    • When an attachment's size is displayed in bytes within Microsoft Outlook, the SafeSend confirmation dialog box may not accurately reflect this size; this is due to how Microsoft Outlook handles byte-sized attachments
  • Distribution Lists in Calendar Events:
    • When editing a calendar event or using "Reply All" on a calendar event in Microsoft Outlook, distribution lists are not displayed in the SafeSend confirmation dialog box; this is due to how Microsoft Outlook handles distribution lists in calendar events
  • Embedded Images in Outlook for Windows:
    • When the "SS_MarkEmbeddedImagesAsAttachments" setting is enabled, embedded images are not displayed in Outlook for Windows; this is due to how Microsoft Outlook handles embedded images with this setting
  • Nested Message Scanning (This does not occur in version 6.0 of the Web Add-in. However, it may still occur in earlier versions):
    • When replying to an email from the Outlook side reading pane, the text of a nested message is not scanned by the DLP add-on; this is due to the way Outlook presents nested messages in the reading pane
